LAKE SANTEELAH, NC
much to our dismay - the smoke only seemed to thicken. by the third day it had gotten so heavy we started to get headaches, making us a bit worried about the course of the wildfires. we had no cell service, and no way to receive updates about the fire battle, but based on the air quality the fire had to be getting closer. we assured ourselves a park ranger would stop by if this were the case, but got out the binos and tried to spot flames anyway.
despite it being a gorgeous lake nestled in a pristine section of the smoky mountains - the area was almost completely uninhabited. very, very quiet and still. no weekenders on boats. no fishermen. peaceful - but more erie than anything, almost like the area had already been evacuated and we’d missed the warning. we’d went for a lengthy bike ride the day before, checking out some other potential camp sites, and hoping for a less smoky pocket. but instead of finding sanctuary we rolled into a section of forest that had recently been burned and was still smoldering in places. this was only 5-6 miles from where we’d set up camp, and on our way back we were stopped by a ranger who politely told us to get the hell off the road. it was unsafe and burnt trees were falling in the area…
